This three storey 6,000 sq m building contains state-of-the-art research facilities and laboratories, notably for advanced bioimaging, along with a café, seminar room and exhibition space in the auditorium for events.
From the outside, the building was designed to appear as a floating box, with Corten cladding used to the upper two floors. To create a sense of openness and take advantage of the parkland setting, the ground floor and atrium is fully glazed.
Britplas was appointed by McLaughlin & Harvey to design, manufacture and install the building façade including rainscreen panels, glazing, windows and doors.
To reflect the University’s sustainability philosophy, the building was designed using Passivhaus design principles.
With very precise requirements around air leakage level and U value performance, balancing these considerations with those of buildability and budgetary constraints was one of the key challenges of this project.
