Fortress Climb-Guard
Newton Lodge, part of the South West Yorkshire Foundation Trust, required a significant upgrade to its external safety infrastructure. The brief was to remove the existing anti-climb system, replace all damaged and rotten support timbers within the roof space, and install new Britplas Climb-Guard along with fascias, soffits, and downpipe protectors. This work spanned nine separate courtyards, covering an overall meterage of 133m, and was essential to maintain the security and integrity of the facility.
The project presented a unique challenge of carrying out extensive works in a live mental health environment, without disrupting daily operations or compromising patient safety. Britplas approached this with a carefully sequenced plan, ensuring that only one courtyard was closed off at any given time. This allowed other areas within the unit to remain accessible throughout the installation period. Each courtyard was treated as an individual work package, with a full sign-off process completed before moving on to the next.
Central to the upgrade was the installation of Britplas’ Fortress Climb-Guard system. Designed specifically for mental health environments, Climb-Guard combines robust security with a discreet, non-institutional appearance. Its curved aluminium profile prevents climbing while blending seamlessly with existing architecture.
The system is lightweight, durable, and 100% recyclable, offering a long-term solution that prioritises both safety and sustainability. Additional elements such as fascias, soffits, and downpipe protectors further reinforced the integrity of the courtyards, eliminating potential ligature points and reducing risk.
The team’s professionalism and responsiveness was highlighted by Sally Ironfield, South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s Senior Planning Manager, who praised their conduct and attention to detail:
“The team on site were fantastic. Great levels of engagement with our ward and security teams ensuring excellent compliance with tool management and safety requirements across the scheme, plus the resulting product is aesthetically very pleasing.”
The successful completion of this project has significantly enhanced the safety and security of Newton Lodge. By combining innovative product design and a collaborative approach with the client, we delivered a solution that meets current safety requirements and futureproofs the facility.
